Broadcast live video from your laptop
From action.RAN.org
The internet has brought live video broadcast to everyone. With a camera attached to a laptop in a backpack, live video is possible from nearly anywhere you can get cell phone reception. Here’s how.
Materials Needed
- Laptop computer (with a good battery)
- Webcam or USB-streaming enabled camcorder
- Mobile Broadband Wireless access
Step-By-Step
- Find a location with wireless internet access. There’s two ways to do this.
- A wireless “[hotspot]”. Some cities have free or cheap city-wide networks.
- A broadband [EVDO] connection. Laptop accessory that enables internet that works nearly anywhere a cell phone does. Sprint and Verizon both sell cards for about $100. You’ll also need a service plan that will run about $60/month.
- Find a webcam. Cheap ones will do the trick inside in good light. Outside, or in low light you’llneed something more expensive. Sony Handycams work great for about $300 but just about any video camera with USB connection will work.
- Set up an account at Justin.tv. Use the troubleshooting page for any troubles.
- Charge up your laptop and camera. This is the tricky part. Most batteries will only give you a couple hours of service. If you want more than that, you’ll need some bigger batteries.
- Plug and play!
